Life, for most of us, is a constant carousel ride in search of the holy grail, an undulating battle through the tidal waves of our aspirations. Usually, our ultimate desires are never reached, leaving us feeling unfulfilled and inadequate. Many reasons contribute to our despair, a despair which is more often than not, a subconscious one; we are not actively aware of why we feel the way we do. Our mood and the state of our mental health is cumulative. We do not just arrive at a place of doom. And usually, the cause is of our own making, through unspecific or unrealistic goals, through lack of action in pursuit of those goals, and through an unhelpful outlook. We are pretty much conditioned to expect things, to expect money, to expect happiness, to expect success to fall in our laps. We are a society nowadays of want, want, want. We are a society of expectation.
All that we see, on a daily basis, is a bombardment of all things expensive, all things perfect, all things that appear unattainable to our own lives. We see adverts tempting us with things that we can't afford, we see social media posts of others' lives which appear perfect. We then, subconsciously, begin to develop a feeling of inadequacy. We can't afford the things that we want, and we don't have a life as exciting as all the celebrities, and even all of our friends. We become unworthy of our own existence.
Does wearing a 'Rolex' give us a greater experience of time?
Does your 'Versace' handbag carry your things more effectively than the 'Debenhams' one?
Expect nothing, receive everything.
Why does a man choose to sit beside a lake and read a newspaper? He uses his eyes, but he does not see. If only we looked up from our expectations and the experience that we want to create, and saw the experience which is already in front of us. Life could be different, if only we looked at things differently. If only we saw what was actually around us instead of what we try to put around us. Why do we not look up and see the beautiful blue sky? Why do we sit at the side of the lake and not see the shimmering of the sun in the clear water? Why do we not see the rolling hills topped with pure snow? Why do we not hear the birds singing and feel the quiet calmness of nature? Why do we not see that the branches of the tree bend and adapt to the blowing of the wind? Why are we irritated and annoyed when we hear children play, instead of being absorbed into their innocent imagination and wonder? Why does it take us to become old before we appreciate life?
The stupid thing is, that all of these things are right in front of us, all around us all of the time, but we never see them. It doesn't mean that we cannot be ambitious and strive for our greatness and our destiny. That should be part of the responsibility that we have to ourselves anyway, but we must recognise that true achievement is not a 'Rolex' or a 'Bentley'. True achievement is HAPPINESS, something which is within the control of all of us. Happiness is a conscious ability that we can create for ourselves. It is under our control, so long as we allow it. How can a man with nothing be happy, yet a millionaire is miserable? It is all the result of our expectations and our mindset. We all can have it.
Appreciate the small things in life, because the small things are sometimes bigger than the big things. Have a great day; it is under your control. The best things in life are free!
