We all have days when we are feeling down, or miserable. For some, those days may stretch into weeks or months. For some, it may be a constant. Is that you?
So, today, it might be raining hard, but tomorrow, maybe the sun is going to come out again. What on earth do we mean by this? Well, to start off with, there are two meanings; a literal meaning and a metaphorical meaning. Of course, the weather itself is unpredictable, and can change from one day to the next, or one moment to the next. We, as human beings are no different. We can be happy one minute, and sad the next. We have mood swings, and even the most optimistic among us are never 100% consistent. We are, after all, only human.
A metaphorical meaning is always about interpretation, personal interpretation, and what that interpretation does for us. How it helps us. Most of us know, that when life rains on us hard, there can feel like no hope, no way out, no FUTURE. We can never see past the rain that is hitting us. We can never see past the darkness. We can never see past that moment.
The truth is, that the sun DOES come out after it has rained, and even though that rain may last, it may pound us with ferocity, it is not until you have weathered that storm that the sun will appear. The crux of the matter, the crux of our interpretations, is that we have to acknowledge the fight against the elements, and to BELIEVE. To believe that when we can hold on, with courage, that we WILL survive. And the most important thing to believe, and to remind ourselves of, is that it will be worth it.
Of course, this is easier said than done, but that applies to everything, right? So how do we achieve this mentality, this philosophy of life that we can live by? It has to come through training, our own mental training. We have to develop our own mental STRENGTH. We have to teach ourselves to endure periods of gloom.
Firstly, we have to ACCEPT that it is raining. Unless we do this we cannot move forward. You know, we can all be miserable and fed up of the cold Winter days and the long dark Winter nights. It is due to our bodies lack of absorption of Vitamin D, which comes from sunlight. But we don't consciously think of it in that way. We don't interpret our starvation of Vitamin D as the 'cause' of our problems. We only focus on the fact that we are feeling down. When we can accept that it is raining, there is absolutely no need to renounce a bad day. The fact is, we can stimulate our own mood, and our own success by our conscious actions. If I run a Marathon on a rainy day, is it less successful than on a sunny day? No way! Therefore my own successes, my own achievements are the result of my own actions. If I am defeated before I even step foot outside, then I have already determined my own loss. I cannot win.
We can learn to endure periods of gloom by deliberately and actively reminding ourselves not only that everything will be ok, that the sun will come out again, but by taking back control of what we do about it. Start by closing your eyes and visualising your own gloom in terms of that stormy day, the overbearing feeling of being surrounded by nothing but darkness, and then consciously, actively visualise the sun appearing powerfully from behind the clouds. The wet surfaces begin to shine before you, your face and body begins to feel an overwhelming warmth from the power of the sun. Positivity has emerged from the negativity; your negativity. You have created your rebirth. This requires continual and dedicated visualisation, but you can train YOURSELF.
We have to get up, as hard as it may be, and move when we don't want to. Only then, will we enter that room where the sunlight shines through every day. When we no longer care to let the rain affect us, we no longer have any reason to feel down. Every bad day can be a great one if we make it.
When you can stand in the rain, and not notice the rain, you have become one with your surroundings, and one with yourself. It no longer matters. Walk On!
